As the speed pedelec is a relatively new
vehicle category, legislation is still subject to
modifications at a high rate. This could render
the information in this chapter outdated. No
rights can be derived from this text. Consult
with your dealer for the latest updates on rules
and regulations.
Information about speed pedelecs
Number plates
In most EU countries a number plate is compulsory
for speed pedelecs. The requirements and process to
obtain the number plates differ greatly. Please contact
your dealer about this subject.
Driver license and age limit
Speed pedelec riders must have an AM driving licence
at least. For most countries the legal age requirement
to get such a license is 16 years old. In the UK you must
be at least 14 years old in order to drive an e-bike.
Please consult with your local government to make
sure you are allowed to drive a speed pedelec in your
country.
Insurance
In most countries, such as the Netherlands, a liability
insurance is compulsory. Please contact your dealer
about possible obligations on the subject of insurance
in your country.
Traffic code
In most countries the speed pedelec has to comply
to the same traffic code as mopeds. This generally
means speed pedelecs are not allowed on bicycle lanes,
although in many cases exceptions are made. Have
a close look at the signs to see if mopeds or speed
pedelecs in specific are allowed to drive on a special
designated lane.
