SHOULDER AND LAP BELT INSTALLATION
COMBINATION LAP & SHOULDER BELT (LOWER RETRACTOR & K12 BUCKLES)
(Can be used with QLK Docking Stations)
24. The buckle stalk anchorages should be placed so they are wider than the wheelchair width, to enable
the wheelchair to travel between the anchorages (GG)
25. The buckle stalk anchorage should be located behind the wheelchair, to give lapbelt angles
35-75 degrees (45-75 degrees, preferred) (FF).
26. The buckle release (top of buckle stalk) should be positioned so it is accessible to the occupant
(wearer) for all Drive from wheelchair positions and for all vehicles requiring European Whole Vehicle
Approval (ECWVTA) (FF)(GG).
If the vehicle is to be designed for different wheelchair passengers, then the buckle
stalk height should be set no higher than the hip height of the lowest wheelchair passenger,
otherwise the lapbelt may be held away from the occupants pelvis, causing submarining
which is where the wheelchair occupant slides forward in their wheelchair and under the
lapbelt.
27. The buckle stalk anchorage locations can be approximately calculated using the following formulas.
It is recommended, that the actual wheelchair (or range of wheelchairs) are placed inside the vehicle,
to check the accuracy of the occupant belt geometry:
FORMULAE 1: P-point to Buckle Anchorage (X) = (Seat 50mm)/ TAN (lapbelt angle)
FORMULAE 2: P-point to Buckle Anchorage (Z)=Seat 50mm
FORMULAE 3: Diagonal length from P-point to Anchorage= (Seat 50mm)/SIN (lapbelt angle)
Seat Height – see Table 2.
50mm represents a cylinder of 100mm diameter placed on the wheelchair seat and is used to give the
approximate wheelchair P-point, taken from ISO10542-1
Example: For a mid-Size Male, if a lapbelt angle of between 45 and 75 degrees were used, then
(500+50)/Tan (45 or 75) is 154- 550mm behind wheelchair P-point (X-Axis)
The diagonal length from the P-point to the anchorage would be:
(550/Sin (45 or 75)= 569mm (75°) to 777mm (45°).
If a 450mm buckle stalks where used, then the buckle release would be 119-327mm diagonally below
the wheelchair P-point. Distance greater than 250mm may be difficult for occupant to see and reach.
