SMARTRATE
®
DISPLAY
Before the blinking segment in the bar graph can show the zone (Weight Loss or
Cardiovascular) that your heart rate is in, you must enter your “
Age
” (during the
course Setup prompts) and either, wear a POLAR
®
chest strap, or hold onto the
touch-sensitive handrail grips while using the course.
Weight Loss
Zone
: Maintaining your heart rate between 55% and 70% of your
maximum aerobic hear t rate, helps burn enough calories that, when
continued on a regular basis for 30 minutes or more, provides the greatest fat-
burning results.
Cardiovascular Zone
: Maintaining your heart rate between 70% and 80% of your
maximum aerobic heart rate, helps you (when continued on a regular basis for 30
minutes or more) improve your overall cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory fitness level.
Important:
During a course, your heart rate must be above 40 beats per minute
before the SmartRate segment begins to blink. Your EFX has the heart rate touch-
sensitive electrodes on the handrail so you don’t need to wear a POLAR
®
chest
strap. However, you will need to hold onto the touch-sensitive grips. Note that
pressing
QuickStart
disables the SmartRate display feature.
HEART RATE DISPLAY
The heart rate display lets you monitor your heart rate. When a heart beat is de-
tected, the number appears in the small upper right display (refer to Diagram 10)
and the SmartRate indicator blinks in time with your pulse. If you do not hold onto
the touch-sensitive handrail grips or are not wearing a POLAR
®
chest strap, your
heart rate will not be detected and no pulse rate appears. Refer to
The Heart Rate
Feature on page 30.
UPPER DISPLAY
The Precor banner and course profiles appear in the large center display (LED
matrix). Always start a workout at the Precor banner. During workouts, the course
profile appears in the center display and corresponds to the program you se-
lected. As you proceed through your workout, your position is indicated by a
blinking cell.
INFORMATIONAL DISPLAYS PRIOR TO SHUTDOWN
The EFX saves its battery charge by moving into a shutdown mode. Whenever
PEDAL FASTER appears on the display, the heart rate, SmartRate
®
and course
indicators turn off. If the user does not maintain a stride rate of 40 strides per
minute, then a thirty second shut down process begins.
When twenty-eight seconds remain, the upper display appears blank and all key
presses are ignored except
Reset
. The touch-sensitive heart rate features are
also ignored. If no pedaling occurs in the next eight seconds, a row of dots (that
correspond to the number of seconds remaining before the EFX shuts off) ap-
pears in the upper display.
