MSF
Minutes, seconds, frames. This is the structure of a CD: 2048 bytes per frame, 75
frames per second, 60 seconds per minute.
OTP: Opposite track path
A variation of DVD dual-layer disc layout, where readout for the first layer begins at
the center of the disc and readout for the second layer begins at the outer edge of the
disc.
PTP: Parallel track path
A variation of DVD dual-layer disc layout, where readout begins at the center of the
disc for both layers.
Spindown Time
The time after a disc read that the drive keeps spinning. When a CD-ROM is
accessed, the drive will read a file or directory, and after a while stop spinning in a
power-down mode. This saves energy and lowers spindle motor wear.
When you set spindown time to a higher value, the drive will be spinning longer
after a read action. The standard setting is 2 minutes and is long enough for most
applications.
Tracking Error (TE)
Tracking error is a measure of how accurately the laser tracks within the pre-groove
area of the disc. A good disc will show low tracking error across the graph, showing
a fairly consistent track at all rotational speeds. A bad disc will show a high tracking
error, which is caused by eccentricity or poor quality of the manufactured media.
