Appendix A: Glossary
This section explains some terms used in this manual. This information will make
the use of PlexTools Professional easier.
a-characters
Consists of the following characters: A-Z, 0-9 and _ (underscore).
Advanced Error Detection
As opposed to data tracks, audio tracks have no error correction/detection
information included. Because of this it is theoretically impossible to detect and
correct read errors.
Plextor CD-ROM drives, however, have a special function that can detect audio read
errors. PlexTools Professional can use this Advanced Error Detection; and upon
finding errors the software can instruct the drive to re-read the sector at a lower
speed or to ignore this error.
BLER
Block error rate. C1 is error correction for block error rate.
Buffer Under Run Error Proof
This technology avoids buffer underrun errors by suspending the write process at a
known location when the buffer empties, and then restarting the write process when
the writing drive’s buffer refills.
C1
C1 is error correction for the block error rate (BLER), which consists of bit errors at
the lowest level. BLER is normally given in errors per second. The typical maximum
BLER for quality recording is 220 errors per second.
C2
C2 error correction applies to bytes in a frame (24 bytes per frame, 98 frames per
block) and is an indication of the drive’s attempt to use extended error correction to
recover the data. Even a few C2 errors can be an indication of poor media quality or
a drive’s inability to write or read correctly.
CAV
Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) is when the disc keeps spinning at the same
rotational speed, but the data read speed varies from a lower speed on the inner
tracks of the CD to a higher speed on the outer tracks, because of the increasing
circumference of the disc.
