COMPRESSION CHECK

IF AFTER THE ENGINE TUNE IN, A POWER LOSS, EXCES-
SIVE OIL OR FUEL CONSUMPTION ARE DETECTED,
MEASURE THE CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE.

Heat the engine.

Set the ignition switch to OFF.

Remove the fuel pump relay from the relevant housing.

Remove all the spark plugs from the cylinder head.

Fit a cylinder compression gauge in the spark plug hole.

Let the engine run and measure the compression value.

•

PUSH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL COMPLETELY DURING THE COMPRESSION VAL-
UE MEASUREMENT.

•

ALWAYS USE A BATTERY COMPLETELY CHARGED SO AS TO OBTAIN A SPEED
EQUAL TO AT LEAST 300 RPM.

Compression value:

1373 kPa (14 kgf/cm2) at 300 rpm

Minimum pressure:

1030 kPa (10.5 kgf/cm2) at 300 rpm

Reading difference among cylinders:

147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2) at 300 rpm

If the compression of one or more cylinders is low, add a small quantity of engine oil in the cylinder

through the spark plug hole, then measure the cylinder compression again.

- If by adding oil, the compression has improved, probably the piston rings and/or cylinder holes are

worn or damaged.

- If pressure remains low after carrying out this operation, probably the valves stick or are not placed

properly in their seats, or the head gasket sealing is loose.
