Field of application
Mountaineering and walking axes for
climbing in snowy and glaciated terrain.
This product must not be loaded
beyond its strength rating, nor be used
for any purpose other than that for
which it is designed.
WARNING
Activities involving the use of this
equipment are inherently dangerous.
You are responsible for your own
actions and decisions.
Before using this equipment, you must:
- Read and understand all instructions
for use.
- Get specifi c training in its proper use.
- Become acquainted with its
capabilities and limitations.
- Understand and accept the risks
involved.
Failure to heed any of these warnings
may result in severe injury or death.

activities defi ned in the fi eld of
application is essential before use.
This product must only be used by
competent and responsible persons, or
those placed under the direct and visual
control of a competent and responsible
person.
Gaining an adequate apprenticeship in
appropriate techniques and methods of
protection is your own responsibility.
You personally assume all risks and
responsibilities for all
damage, injury or death
which may occur during
or following incorrect
use of our products in
any manner whatsoever. If you are not
able, or not in a position to assume this
responsibility or to take this risk, do not
use this equipment.
You must have a rescue plan and
the means to rapidly implement it in
case of diffi culties encountered while
using this equipment. This implies
an adequate training in the necessary
rescue techniques.
Nomenclature of parts
(1) Adze, (2) Pick, (3) Shaft, (4) Spike.
Principal materials: steel pick and adze,
aluminum alloy shaft.
Inspection, points to verify
Before each use
Carry out a visual check of the
condition of the ice tool. If any cracks
are visible, the axe should be retired
immediately.
During each use
It is important to regularly monitor
the condition of the product and its
connections to the other equipment in
the system.
Instructions for use
Diagram 1. Strength
Two types of ice axes exist, classifi ed
according to their strength:
- Technical axes marked T have a higher
strength. In particular a 50 cm shaft
must withstand a load of 3.5 kN.
Petzl Charlet technical axes (marked T)
resist up to 4 kN.
- Basic axes, marked B, are not as
strong as technical axes. In particular
a 50 cm shaft must withstand a load
of 2.5 kN.
Diagram 2. Maintenance
After each use, dry your axes. Spray
with lubricant to avoid corrosion.
Use only a fi le to sharpen the pick and
the spike. Do not heat the steel parts.
Discard the old screws when changing
the pick. Tighten the screws in several
cycles. Do not forget the lock washers.
