ONTH AND DATE SETTING
The Panerai L’Astronomo - Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Equation of Time has a
gradual date change mechanism, a process which takes about 3 hours to
complete: from 10 p.m. to 1.00 a.m., with a margin of ± 30 minutes. This
particular method of changing the date is inspired by the mechanical tradition
of Swiss watchmaking and it allows the month and date to be changed in both
directions, moving the crown either forwards or backwards, depending on the
shorter distance between the indicated month and date and the ones required.
The month and date setting is carried out by moving the hour hand:
1. Raise the lever of the device protecting the winding crown
(A)
and pull out
the winding crown
(B)
to the first click
(position 1)

2. Turn the winding crown

forwards or backwards until the desired month
is indicated by the hand of the month indicator
(F)
at 3 o’clock.
3. When the month is correctly set, continue to move the hour hand
(C)
clockwise
or anti-clockwise until the required date appears in the date window at 3
o’clock

. If the date changes when the hour hand
(C)
goes past 12, then 12
corresponds to midnight, otherwise it corresponds to midday.
4. Return the winding crown

To make this operation easier and faster, the watch is supplied with a special tool
for setting the watch

. To set the month and date by using the tool:
1. Raise the lever of the device protecting the winding crown

and pull out the
winding crown

to the first click
(position 1)
. In this position the hour hand

moves in steps of one hour.
2. Mount the watch on the tool as shown in
diagram b
, making sure that the
device protecting the winding crown is held by the two black cylinders.
3. Turn the handle backwards (dir, hands move clockwise) or forwards
(direction - , hands move anti-clockwise) to set the correct month.
4. When the month

is correctly set, move the hour hand

clockwise or anti-
clockwise until the required date appears in the date window

5. Remove the watch from the tool.
6. Return the winding crown
