Frame and field
Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving
picture. A frame consists of 2 fields.
Frame
Field
Field
≥
A frame still is consists of 2 alternating fields, so the picture may
appear blurred, but overall quality is high.
≥
A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a
frame still so picture quality is lower.
Hard disk (HDD)
This is a mass data storage device used in computers etc. It spins
a disk which has a surface treated with magnetic fluid and reads/
writes large amounts of data at high speed by bringing magnetic
head close to the disk.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
This is a system used for compressing/decoding colour still
pictures.
If you select JPEG as the storage system on digital cameras etc.,
the data will be compressed to 1/10
— 1/100 of its original size.
The feature of JPEG is less deterioration in picture quality
considering the degree of compression.
Linear PCM
These are uncompressed digital signals. CDs are recorded with
44.1 kHz/16 bit PCM, while DVDs use PCM between 48 kHz/16 bit
and 96 kHz/24 bit, allowing playback with greater quality sound.
The linear PCM signals output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT,
OPTICAL terminal are stereo (2 channel).
LPCM sound is available when recording in XP mode.
MPEG2/MPEG4 (Moving Picture Experts Group)
They are standards for colour motion pictures to be effectively
compressed or expanded.
MPEG2 is a compression technology used for DVD, etc. This unit
adopts MPEG2 when recording programmes.
MPEG4 is a compression technology designed for use on mobile
devices and network. It can record pictures with high efficiency
even in low bit rate.
Pan&Scan/Letterbox
In general, DVD-Video are produced with the intention to be
viewed on a widescreen TV with an aspect ratio of 16:9.
This means you can view most of material with the intended aspect
ratio on a widescreen TV.
Material with this ratio will not fit onto a standard TV with an aspect
ratio of 4:3. 2 styles of picture, “Pan&Scan” and “Letterbox”, deal
with this problem.
Pan&Scan:
The sides are cut off so the picture fills the screen.
Letterbox:
Black bands appear at the top and bottom of the
screen so the picture appears in an aspect ratio of
16:9.
Playback control (PBC)
This is a method of playing Video CDs. You can select parts to
play by using menus recorded on the disc.
Play list
This is a collection of scenes. It enables you to play these scenes
in succession or to select specific ones.
TIFF (Tag Image File Format)
A still picture data standard.
A common format for storing high quality images on digital
camera’s and other devices.

21-pin Scart cable to a TV featuring the Q Link or similar function.
Q Link offers the following functions:
