D E S C R I P T I O N
C O P Y is p r o b a b l y the m o s t versatile and t h e r e f o r e the m o s t c o m p l e x
function o f the D O S . It allows y o u to c o p y the c o n t e n t s of an existing
(old) file or set of files, to a new file or set of files. This is the general
function, h o w e v e r there are a n u m b e r of variations and these are:
T h e n e w file(s) can be on the s a m e disc as the old files, or on a different
disc.
A n u m b e r o f old files can be m e r g e d into one new file.
Y o u can give the n e w file the same filename as the old file, or a different
one.
C o p y i n g (either to the s a m e disc or a different disc) can be d o n e using
o n e o r two disc drives.
T h e new file(s) can be given a write p r o t e c t e d or u n p r o t e c t e d status, or
can assume the status of the old file, y o u can decide which o p t i o n to set.
In addition to the a b o v e variations, there are a n u m b e r of constraints
a n d rules, and these are fully explained in the notes which follow the
options.
N o t e : T h e disc drive being
copied f r o m
is called the
source drive
and the
drive being copied
to
is called the
target drive.
Similarly, the file being
c o p i e d
f r o m
is the
old
file and the file being copied
to
is the
new
file.
