5.11.2 Configuration 2

Slot 0, Slot 3, Slot 6 and Slot 9, these are the upstream ports, which mean an expansion interface card is present in the PCIe slot.
Slot 0, Slot 3 and Slot 6 are x16: You can plug in a x16 or x8 interface card. If you do not have a x16 interface card you can use a x8 card, but it
will run at x8.

Slot 9 is x8: You can only use a x8 interface card. If you install a x16 card, it will only run at x8.

5.11.3 Configuration 3

Slot 0, Slot 4, Slot 8 and Slot 12 are the upstream ports, which mean an expansion interface card is present in the PCIe slot.
Slot 4, Slot 8 and Slot 12 are x8 and can only use a x8 interface card. If you install a x16 card, it will only run at x8.
