WEIGHING THE DUST COLLECTED
AND DETERMINING THE CONCENTRATION FOR THE CIP 10
PRINCIPLE
The determination of the mass of the dust
collected is done by weighing the rotating
cup with its polyurethane foam before
and after the collection using a laboratory
balance with a precision at least equal to
0.1 mg.
Since the weight of the polyurethane
foam is sensitive to the humidity of the
ambient air, it’s appropriate to weigh ref-
erence cups (generally three) at the same
time as the measurement cups and to
correct the weight of the collected dust
obtained from the measurement cup by
the change in the weight of the reference
cups (change due to a change in the rela-
tive humidity of the air in the room with
the balances between the two weigh-
ings).
PROCEDURE
The following procedure specified by the INRS should be used:
PREPARATION OF THE CUPS
Before any operation, the cup, cover and foam must be carefully washed with
a hot solution of a wetting agent and rinsed. Perform several cycles and do
the last rinsing with filtered demineralized water. Next allow the cup, cover
and foam to dry for a dozen hours at moderate temperatures (50 to 60°C).
Foams supplied by ARELCO A.R.C. have already been processed this way.
The foams can be prepared separately and stored in a dry, dust free place.
Each cup is provided with its corresponding foam and closed with its cover.
Wearing gloves is recommended to avoid any hand borne contamination.
Cups and covers are then labeled with an indelible marking (for example, a
number).
