Fill-In Flash
In the fill-in flash mode, the flash fires regardless of available light. It is
useful - for example - to illuminate a person's face in the shadow of a tree
or for taking pictures with backlighting or under artificial lighting from fluo-
rescent lamps, etc.
Press the flash pop-up button.
The flash will pop up.
Press the [
] button.
Check
appears on the control panel.
If it does not appear, press the [
] button a number of times until it
appears.
Press the shutter release button down halfway.
The orange lamp inside the viewfinder will light up.
Press the shutter release button down all the way.
The flash will fire.

MEMO
• Take pictures within the flash illumination range (P. 20).
• It is difficult to achieve correct flash lighting effect when pictures are
taken under bright light. In such a case, use the spot metering mode
(P. 32).

Red-Eye Reducing Flash
In the red-eye reducing mode, before the actual flash is emitted, 10 short
preliminary flashes are fired in rapid sequence. These short flashes con-
tract the subject's pupils and, hence, reduce the incidence of red eyes
seen in conventional flash photographs.
Press the flash pop-up button.
The flash will pop up.
Press the [ ] button.
Check that
appears on the control panel.
If it does not appear, press the [
] button some times until it
appears.
Press the shutter release button down halfway.
The orange lamp inside the viewfinder will light up.
Press the shutter release button down all the way.
The preliminary flashes will fire first followed by the actual flash.

NOTE
• The red-eye reducing flash mode cannot be used for rapid-fire shots.
• The mode is automatically turned to the auto-flash mode when you
turn on the sequence mode while the camera is in the red-eye reduc-
ing mode.
MEMO
• The shutter will remain open for about 1 second, therefore keep the
camera steady and firm.
• The red-eye reducing mode has less of an effect in the following situ-
ations.
* When the subject is not looking directly at the flash
* When the subject did not see the preliminary flashes
* When the subject is far away
* Because of physical difference between people
