Test Sub (dive) mode for surface swimmers:
Set the unit for a depth of 1 meter and a time of 10
seconds, and leave the screen set to “Sub.” Swim several laps of a pool using standard crawl and even a
breast stroke to show the unit will not fire in heavy surface waves. Next, submerge to 1 meter when the
PSLV will inflate.
Test Sub (dive) mode for breath-hold diving training:
Set the mode to “Sub” and the trigger time to
20 seconds, and the depth deeper than pool depth. Have a diver stay submerged for 20 seconds when
the PSLV will inflate.
Test Sub (dive) mode for protection during a deep, uncontrolled plunge with full battle gear.
One of the advantages of the PSLV is it will recover a fast sinking, disabled, heavily laden soldier. While
being observed by a safety diver, have an operator in full gear, the heaviest you expect to use in the field
be the subject. Set the trigger time to 15 seconds and the depth to 3 meters and then have the operator
jump into the pool and then swim back to the surface if possible—-the self-rescue scenario. Next, have
him sink as if he were unconscious or disabled and observe the inflation and head position of the subject
as he surfaces. Remember, unlike other flotation systems, the PSLV will provide full flotation—50 pounds
at 25 feet and at the surface.
Test ScbA (scuba) mode:
In this mode the trigger time is ignored, respecting only the depth setting.
Used primarily in shallow water for rebreather operatons. Wear a self contained breathing apparatus and
set the trigger depth to 3 to 4 meters and hover above this depth for several minutes. Open your airway
as you would do for a free ascent and dip down below the trigger depth when the PSLV will inflate.
CAUTION: This mode is potentially very dangerous and should only be practiced by very experienced
divers as the risk of air emoblism is significant and could result in death.
The Sub mode: use for recovery from a deep plunge, or in training.
