Chapter 7 - Internet
7-9
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web (WWW) application is
started by selecting
WWW
in the Internet appli-
cations main view, and pressing
Select
.
To exit the WWW application, press
Close
in the
WWW main view (the Hotlist). If you are still
connected to the Internet, the command is
Hang
up
. Pressing
Hang up
will end the data call and
close the WWW application.
Hotlist
The WWW main view shows the Hotlist and, be-
low the Hotlist, the URL entry field.
The Hotlist is a list of predefined WWW page lo-
cations. The address of the last visited WWW
page is shown automatically in the URL entry
field. To view a page, select a page in the Hotlist
or enter another address in the URL entry field
(use the backspace key to delete the address
shown) and press
Fetch
.
To edit the Hotlist, press
Define
. A new set of
commands is activated:
Press
Edit
to edit the parameters of the se-
lected Hotlist entry. The editable parameters
are Item name and URL. The item name can be
edited freely. A valid URL address is, for exam-
ple, http://www.nokia.com/. If the WWW
page is stored locally, also the prefix “file:///”
can be used (see "Connecting to WWW: Lo-
cally stored WWW pages").
Press
New
to define a new Hotlist item. The
default beginning of a URL address is “http:/”,
but also the prefix “file:///” can be used. The
WWW application checks that the syntax of
the URL you enter is correct. If a prefix is
missing, “http://” will be added automatically.
Press
Delete
to delete the selected Hotlist en-
try.
Connecting to WWW
Select a WWW page from the Hotlist or enter a
URL address into the URL entry box (see "Navi-
gating in WWW") and press
Fetch
. If the WWW
page was already recently fetched, the page is
fetched from temporary working memory (or
“cache”). If not, the page is fetched from the In-
ternet by making a data call to the selected In-
ternet access point. You can also fetch WWW
pages stored on the communicator by using the
prefix “file:///.” See "Locally stored WWW pages"
at the end of this section.
Some servers have access restrictions which re-
quire a valid user name and password. In this
case, you must enter the user name and pass-
word before the document can be fetched. The
communicator stores the passwords and user
names that you enter to gain access to that do-
main, and the next time you connect to the same
domain, they will be offered automatically. If au-
tomated login does not succeed, you must enter
the information manually.
The fetched WWW page is loaded in the WWW
browser. The status line on top of the display
shows the status of the connection, the title of
the document and how many bytes of the docu-
ment file have been received.
