The Low-Pass Filter
The image sensor that acts as the camera’s picture element is fitted
with a low-pass filter to prevent moiré. If you suspect that dirt or
dust on the filter is appearing in photographs, you can clean the
filter as described below. Note, however, that the filter is
extremely delicate and easily damaged. Nikon recommends that
the filter be cleaned only by Nikon-authorized service personnel.
1
Charge the battery or connect an AC adapter.
A reliable power source is required when inspecting or
cleaning the low-pass filter. If the battery level is below
J
(60%), turn the camera off and insert a fully-charged EN-EL4a
battery or connect an optional EH-6 AC adapter.
2
Select [Lock mirror up for cleaning].
Remove the lens and turn the camera on.
Highlight [Lock mirror up for cleaning] in
the setup menu (pg. 346) and press
2
(note that this option is not available at
battery levels of
J
or below).
3
Press
J
.
The message shown at right will be
displayed in the monitor and a row of
dashes will appear in the top control
panel and viewfinder. To restore
normal operation without inspecting
the low-pass filter, turn the camera off.
