This catalytic heater is equipped with a temperature probe to monitor catalyst operation. The catalyst is an
integral part of this unit. It is imperative to inspect and maintain the catalyst to help sustain optimal
effi ciency and emission levels. Catalyst operating temperatures range from 500F (light off temperature) to
1,400F (260C to 760C); operating the unit with the catalyst temperature above the maximum for a
prolonged period will cause permanent damage. The supplied catalyst monitor will provide a read out of the
catalyst temperature. Please refer to manufacturers operating instructions supplied with the catalyst
monitor.
90.1C
A slight humming sound may be heard depending on the location of the blower. The sound may be
minimized by turning down the blower speed. It is also normal during operation to hear creaking and/or ticking
sounds as the metal plate components of the appliance expands and contracts. This may be present during bot
warm up and cool down periods.
During the break-in period (the fi rst 2 or 3 fi res) create only small, hot fi res using kindling this will allow the
fi rebrick to cure. Do not be alarmed if small hairline cracks develop in the fi rebrick. This is a normal
occurrence and does not pose a safety hazard. During this time the paint may also emit an odour as it cures an
you may wish to open a door or window to alleviate the smell.
There are many different ways to start a fi re, review the hints and warnings in this section to ensure the fi re is
started properly.
8.3 CATALYST
ALWAYS OPERATE THIS APPLIANCE WITH THE DOOR CLOSED AND LATCHED EXCEPT
DURING START-UP AND RE-FUELING.
Draft is the force which moves air from the appliance up through the chimney. The amount of draft in your
chimney depends on the length of the chimney, local geography, nearby obstructions and other variables.
Adjusting the air control regulates the temperature. The draft can be adjusted from a low burn rate with the
air control on the low setting to a fast burn rate with the air control on the high setting (far left position).
Inadequate draft may cause back-puffi ng into the room and may cause plugging of the chimney. Too much
draft may cause an excessive temperature in the appliance, glowing red appliance parts or an uncontrollable
burn which can all lead to a chimney fi re or a permanent damage to the appliance.
This wood heater has a manufacturer-set minimum low burn rate that must not be altered. It is against
United States federal regulations to alter this setting or otherwise operate this wood heater in a manner
inconsistent with operating instructions in this manual.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS / SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
91.1A
All homes with a solid fuel burning appliance should have at least one fi re extinguisher in a central location,
known to all, at least one smoke detector and carbon monoxide (CO) detector in the room containing the
appliance. If the smoke detector sounds an alarm, correct the cause but do not de-activate or relocate the
smoke detector. If the carbon monoxide detector sounds an alarm, immediately vent the area, evacuate and
call your local fi re department.
