Post Equalization on the BSR 2000
The BSR 2000 supports Post Equalization. Post Equalization is an industry term for
the capability of the BSR to equalize the DOCSIS signal per burst for DOCSIS 1.0
modems. This capability allows the BSR to work more efficiently with multiple
certified DOCSIS 1.0 Cable Modems not capable of supporting the DOCSIS 1.1
Transmit Pre-equalization. As a result, cable operators can now use 16-QAM with
DOCSIS 1.0 modems since Post Equalization equalizes the effects of
micro-reflections, amplitude and group delay distortion to allow error-free 16-QAM
operation.
As implemented on the BSR 2000, Post Equalization is 20 times faster than other
available offerings requiring less than 150 symbol periods in time to achieve over
90% convergence while other available offerings can require a minimum of 3000
symbol periods in time to achieve the same level of convergence. More importantly,
the BSR 2000 equalizer length is 24 TAPS which supports a time span that is three
times longer than the length supported by other offerings. Cable operators can
customize Post Equalization for their needs through modulation profile configuration
commands available in the BSR Command Line Interface (CLI). Recommended
modulation profile configurations are described in the
Equalization Upstream Modulation Profiles
section below. While the equalizer is
always running, customizing the Modulation Profile through the BSR CLI so that the
preamble used is one that includes the
equalizer training sequence
will maximize the
efficient operation of the Post Equalization feature.
