The air bag (1) is lo c a te d in th e s te e r
ing w h ee l hub and, in c o n ju n c tio n
w ith w e a rin g th e sea t b e lts w ith e m e r
ge n c y te n s io n in g re tra c to rs (2), p ro
vid e s in c re a s e d p ro te c tio n fo r th e
driver.
The o p e ra tio n a l re a d in e s s o f th e s u p
p lem e ntal re s tra in t s y s te m (air bag
and ETR’s) is v e rifie d by th e in d ic a to r
lam p “ S R S ” (3) in th e in s tru m e n t
c lu s te r. If no fa u lt is d e te c te d , th e
lam p w ill g o o u t a fte r a p p ro x im a te ly
4 s e c o n d s ; a fte r th e lam p g o e s o u t
th e s y s te m c o n tin u e s to m o n ito r th e
c o m p o n e n ts and c irc u itry o f th e
“ S R S ” and w ill in d ic a te a m a lfu n c tio n
by c o m in g on again:
The fo llo w in g s y s te m c o m p o n e n ts are

c ra s h -s e n s o r, air bag ig n itio n c irc u it,
d riv e r and fro n t p a s s e n g e r sea t b e lt
b u c k le s . Initially, w h e n th e key is
tu rn e d fro m s te e rin g lo c k p o s itio n 0
to p o s itio n s 1 o r 2, m a lfu n c tio n s in
th e c ra s h -s e n s o r are d e te c te d and
in d ic a te d (th e “ S R S ” in d ic a to r lam p
sta y s on).
In th e o p e ra tio n a l m od e, a fte r th e in d i
c a to r lam p has g o n e o u t a fte r th e in i
tial c h e c k , in te rru p tio n s and s h o rt c ir
c u its in th e air bag ig n itio n c irc u it and
in th e d riv e r and fr o n t p a s s e n g e r seat
b e lt b u c k le h a rn e sse s, and lo w v o l
ta g e in th e e n tire sy s te m are d e te c te d
and in d ic a te d .
In th e e v e n t a m a lfu n c tio n o f th e
“ S R S ” is in d ic a te d as o u tlin e d above,
w e s tro n g ly re c o m m e n d th a t y ou v is it
an a u th o riz e d M E R C E D E S -B E N Z
de a le r im m e d ia te ly to have th e s y s
te m c h e c k e d ; o th e rw is e th e “ S R S ”
m ay n o t be a c tiv a te d in a seve re fro n
tal a c c id e n t.
