Driver Airbag
If your vehicle is additionally equipped
w ith a driver airbag, this can be
recognized by the letters “ SRS”
stam ped into the steering wheel hub
pad and by the indicator lamp “ SRS”
(Supplemental Restraint System) in
the instrum ent cluster.
The airbag (1) is located in the ste e r­
ing wheel hub and, in conjunction
w ith wearing the seat belts w ith te n ­
sioning retractors (2), provides
increased p rotection fo r the driver.
The operational readiness of the sup­
plemental restraint system (airbag
and em ergency tensioning retractor)
is verified by the indicator lamp
S u p p le m e n ta l R e s tra in t System
“ SRS" (3) in the instrum ent cluster.
W ith the key in steering lock position
“ 1” or “ 2 ” , the indicator lamp com es
on fo r about 10 seconds then goes
out. If it d o e sn ’t com e on, doesn’t go
out, flicke rs on and off, or com es on
w hile driving, the system is m alfunc­
tioning.
This will not cause the supplem ental
restraint system to be activated. How­
ever, we strongly recom m end that
you visit an authorized MERCEDES-
BENZ dealer immediately to have the
system checked; otherw ise the
“ SRS” may not be activated in a sev­
ere frontal accident.
The airbag is designed to activate
only in severe frontal im pacts (see
illustration on page 24). Only during
these types of im pacts will it provide
its supplem ental protection. The
driver should always wear the seat
belt, otherw ise it is not possible fo r
the airbag to provide its intended pro ­
tection.
