Special Operating Conditions
Winter Driving
Have your car winterized at an author­
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer before
the onset of winter.
• Engine oil change: If “ year-round”
m ultigrade engine oil is not used,
be sure to use an SAE grade
based on am bient tem perature.
For recom m ended engine oil vis­
cosities refer to “ Fuels, Coolants,
Lubricants, e tc .” and last page.
• For diesel fuels, refer to page 95
and last page.
• A nticorrosion/antifreeze in the
coolant: Check a n tico rro sio n /
antifreeze protection periodically.
For capacity refer to “ Fuels,
Coolants, Lubricants, e tc .” .
• Additive in the windshield washer
system : Add windshield washer
solvent to the w ater in the w ind­
shield washer system.
• Test battery: B attery capacity
drops with decreasing am bient
tem perature. A well charged bat­
tery ensures that the engine can
always be started, even at low
am bient tem peratures.
• Tires: We recom m end M + S
radial tires on all w heels fo r the
w inter season. O bserve perm issi­
ble maximum speed fo r M + S
radial tires and the legal speed
limit.
Hints for Driving
The m ost im portant rule fo r slippery
or icy roads is to drive sensibily and to
avoid abrupt acceleration, braking
and steering action. Do not use the
cruise control system under such
conditions.
When the vehicle is in danger of
skidding, move se le cto r lever to
position “ N ” . Try to keep the vehicle
under control by corrective
steering action.
Provided the traffic c o n d ition s will
allow, only brake in a way that the
w heels are locked fo r no m ore than
fractions of a second as otherw ise the
steerability of the vehicle is lost.
Road salts and chem icals can
adversely affect braking efficiency.
Increased pedal force may become
necessary to produce the normal
brake effect. We therefore recom ­
mend depressing the brake pedal
repeatedly when traveling on salt-
strewn roads at length. This can bring
road salt impaired braking efficiency
back to normal. A prerequisite is,
however, that this is possible w ithout
endangering o ther drivers on the
road.
If the vehicle is parked after being
driven on salt treated roads, the
braking efficiency should be tested as
soon as possible after driving is
resum ed while adhering to the safety
requirem ents.
