Appendix: Lamp Burn-In
Burn-in New Lamps
New lamps must be burned-in (seasoned) at full intensity
for 100 hours before dimming for extended periods. Be
sure wall controls are set to full for the first 100 hours or
place the lighting zone controller into burn-in mode. New
LZC units will automatically be in burn-in mode after the
first power-up.
Warning!
Lamps must be operated at full
intensity for 100 hours before being
dimmed. Without these operating hours,
lamps may fail prematurely.
New fluorescent lamps have impurities in them. The lamp manufacturers cannot eliminate all of them, so they
put “cleaners” into the lamp that neutralize the harmful effects of the impurities. The cleaners do not work well
while the lamp is dimmed. New lamps must run for 100 hours at full intensity for the cleaners to do their job.
Without the 100 hours at full intensity, the impurities may cause the lamp to fail within a week (or failure may
take months depending on usage and the amount of impurities).
The lighting zone controller provides a feature to automatically season lamps. Activating its burn-in feature
will cause the lighting zone controllers to drive lamps to full intensity for 100 hours. During this 100 hours, the
lights can be turned ON and OFF via the local wall controls but cannot be dimmed. Also, while in burn-in mode
occupant and daylight sensors will not function. The lights can be dimmed after being at full intensity for 100
hours. Burn-in mode can be applied to any specific lighting zone controller or a group of lighting zone
controllers only by using the Digital microWATT
TM
or eLumen
TM
software.
