Configuring the Shelf Controller
Shelf controller configuration overview
The shelf controller controls the operations of the APX 1000 unit. It manages and boots the
slot cards, maintains a central repository of the unit’s configuration, performs call control and
processing operations, and manages all centralized functions, such as SNMP access or
communication with a RADIUS server.
Shelf controller configuration includes the following tasks:
•
Connecting a console workstation to the serial port on the shelf controller of the
APX 1000 unit
•
Logging into the APX 1000 unit
•
Changing default security settings to protect the unit
•
Configuring IP to make the system accessible by Telnet, SNMP, and Ping
•
Configuring RADIUS access (if appropriate)
Administrative connections
The serial (CONTROL) port of an APX 1000 unit’s shelf controller is used for initial
configuration from a console device. The port can also be configured to connect to a modem to
provide dial-in administrative access to the unit, or it can be connected to a console server.
Once the APX 1000 has been configured with an IP address, it can be reached on the IP
network via a Telnet connection. The following information provides details of these
connection methods.
