WP&Y Diesel Loco, 108,
Sound
THE PROTOTYPE
The Alaskan gold rush is the stuff
of legends, immortalized by the
tales of Jack London. The White
Pass & Yukon Railroad was built
to carry prospectors from Skag-
way into the inhospitable interior.
The gold is long gone, but the
WP&Y has survived to this day.
For the railway’s ore and contain-
er trains, the American Locomo-
tive Company (Alco) built ten
large diesel-electric locomotives
in 1969. After freight traffic was
discontinued on the WP&Y, sever-
al of these powerful locomotives
were sold to Columbia. In the late
1990s, the locomotives were
bought back by the WP&Y,
because additional locos were
needed to cope with the ever-
increasing number of passen-
gers.
