DC Door Strike Wiring using Internal Relay
36.3.2 External Relay Door Strike Wiring
Instead of using the on-board relay to control the door strike, an external relay may be used. This external
relay is controlled by the reader LED output.
If the LED in the reader is driven by the Reader LED signal, TB1-4 or TB3-4, a blocking diode must be
added to the circuit. This blocking diode should be a Schottky barrier rectifier, type 1N5817 or equivalent
(20 volt @ 1 A).
- The external relay’s coil current must be restricted to 40 mA.
- The 5 volt relay coil resistance must be 125 or greater ohms.
- The 12 volt relay coil resistance must be 300 or greater ohms.
Note: Excessive load switching causes contact wear and premature failure. Inductive load (strike)
switching causes EMI (electromagnetic interference) that can interfere with normal operation
of other equipment. To minimize premature contact failure and to increase system reliability,
use a contact protection circuit. Locate the protection circuit as close to the load as possible
