Section 3: Operating Instructions
Operator’s Responsibilities
Hazard control and accident prevention are dependent
upon the awareness, concern, prudence, and proper
training involved in the operation, transport, storage, and
maintenance of the Post Hole Digger. Therefore, it is
absolutely essential that no one operates the digger
without first having read, fully understood, and become
totally familiar with the Operator’s Manual. Make sure the
operator has completed the Operating Checklist below.
Safety Information
!
DANGER!
To prevent serious injury or death:
Do not get pinned in the loader lift arms. Getting pinned in the
loader arms is one of the leading cause of fatal accidents.
•
Always operate attachment while seated with seat belt
fastened around operator and lower seat bar, when
equipped with the skid steer, to help protect the operator
against sudden stops when hitting solid objects.
•
Keep your head, arms, and legs inside the cab while
operating the power machine and attachment.
•
Never operate equipment from outside the cab.
•
Before leaving the operator’s seat, lower attachment to the
ground and shutdown the power machine.
•
Use the skid steer’s alternate emergency exit when exit
passage through the front is blocked.
•
Do not use hand or foot controls for handholds or steps.
•
Keep mud, snow, ice, and debris out of foot controls.
•
If included, raise restraint bar and move controls until both
are locked and interlock system is activated.

Check digger initially and periodically for loose
bolts and pins. Refer to “Torque Values Chart”.

Inspect interlock control system regularly and perform
required maintenance to keep it operating properly.
•
Never bypass or modify a safety device.

DANGER!
To prevent serious injury or death:
•
Keep all persons away from the Post Hole Digger while
lowering, raising, and tilting the auger. Coming in contact
with the attached implement can result in being pinched
and/or entangled causing serious injury or death.
•
Make sure the site is free from hazards before drilling. Look
for obstacles on the ground, beneath mulching, and below
the ground that may need to be removed such as landscape
fabric, wire, etc. Hand digging may be necessary to verify
the presence of underground materials.
•
Keep attachment away from overhead electrical power
lines. Place an orange warning sign under overhead
electrical power lines indicating type of danger above.
•
Prior to drilling, cut a hole in landscape fabric sufficiently
larger than the diameter of the auger to prevent contact or
entanglement with the fabric. Fabric caught in the auger
can cause someone nearby to fall and become caught in the
auger.
•
Do not allow anyone to manually push down on the Post
Hole Digger while in operation; or put anything or anyone
on the unit for the purpose of adding weight to the unit.
Objects and people can be pinched, thrown, or entangled in
the unit.
•
Do not allow anyone to manually guide the auger to
position its point on the ground while auger is operating.
People can become entangled in the unit.
•
Do not remove spoil-pile with hand tools while auger is
operating. Doing so can result in serious injury or death.

WARNING!
To prevent serious injury or death:
•
Allow only persons to operate this implement who have
fully read and comprehended this manual, who have been
properly trained in the safe operation of this implement, and
who are age 16 or older. Serious injury or death can result
from the inability to read, understand, and follow
instructions provided in this manual.
•
It is the operator’s responsibility to keep others away from
the Post Hole Digger while auger is rotating. A person’s
body and/or clothing can become entangled in the auger
causing serious injury or death. Anyone helping should be
kept a safe distance (a minimum of 10 feet) from the auger
while rotating.
•
A Crushing Hazard exists while hooking-up and unhooking
implement. Keep people and animals away while backing-
up to implement or pulling away from implement. Do not
operate hydraulic 3-point lift controls while a person or
animal is directly behind the tractor or near the implement.
•
All guards and shields must be installed and in good
working condition while operating implement.
