a. AROW: The assigned ROW slot is used by the NM to communicate back to the
NC and request network resources. After login, each NM is assigned a time and
frequency in which it must provide its AROW to the NC. This allocates an AROW
slot in each frame and the NM is required to send this AROW each frame. If the
NM fails to provide its AROW for a given number of consecutive frames, the NC
will log the NM out of the network since it appears not to be responding.
b. CROW: The contention ROW slot is used by the NM to communicate to the NC
to request initial log in to the network. It is labeled a “contention” row because
there could be two (2) or more Terminals trying to use the CROW frequency and
time slot within the frame in order to request a log in. If this contention happens,
there are mechanisms in NCW that will inform those two (2) or more Terminals
on how to prioritize use of the CROW. The amount of CROW slots available for
member login is operator settable and is usually dependent on the anticipated
size of the network. Any non-registered node can contend for an available
CROW slot. The spread factor for the CROW is selectable at the NC only.
8.2.3 Data Communications Burst (DCOM)
The DCOM slot or burst is similar to an Orderwire. The DCOM is assigned a specific
frequency and time within a frame in order to communicate data within the network. The
DCOM is reserved for data (IP) traffic. The NC schedules and assigns DCOM slots to
NMs based on priority queue buffer reports contained within the AROW. This data
communications could be between NC to NM, or NM to NM, or NM to the NC. (See
Figure 8-1)
DCOM traffic Quality of Service (QoS) is defined with a DiffServ code point (locally
defined). Code points can be assigned a SATCOM priority level of 0-15 for transmission
by the Modem.
8.2.4 NCW Traffic Example
Figure 8-2 MF-TDMA Structure, shows an example of how MF-TDMA frames may
contain the various types of Orderwires and DCOM bursts.
