12.0 Flying techniques
12.1 Controlling speeds with the brakes
The Green b’s flying speed range is relatively high when using only the brakes. It is
extremely important for both flying performance and safety that speeds are adapted to
each flying situation.
Optimum gliding (in calm winds) can be achieved with the Green b by not braking at all
in flight. The lowest sinking speed is achieved by pulling approximately 25-30 cm on both
brakes. The braking strengths then increase noticeably and the sinking speed does not
improve. Flying at minimum speeds involves the risk of an unintentional stall e.g. due to a
gust of wind, even if the stall limit is approximately 60-80 cm (depending on size) and the
stall is smooth. You should not let go of the brake lines at any time when flying!
12.2 With the speed bar
The glider is trimmed to a medium high speed by the manufacturer. If you use the speed
bar to achieve maximum speeds you will make better progress particularly in headwinds
and upwinds and will be able to fly further. Keep the brakes open and stay calm. If there is
a collapse quickly ease off the speed bar and then go back to the starting position and if
necessary use the brakes. An advantage of the speed bar is that a potential collapse can
be recognised by a sudden loss of load on the strap and can often be avoided by quickly
easing off.
The speed bar system offers a potentially high maximum speed. Of course the collapse
of the side of one wing results in more dynamic reactions compared to trim speed. Only
use the speed bar if you have enough distance from the ground. The high stability that the
canopy offers at maximum speed should not lead you to be careless!
