Before You Start
Before you start programming the CA8WL-AL’s on-board Ethernet module, ensure that you have the following
items:
Serial data cable with loose conductors (Keyscan p/n 40-2322)
Have the latest NETCOM Program Utility – version 6.0.18 or higher - contained on the enclosed Keyscan
Utilities & Drivers CD installed on a PC/laptop that can be serially connected to the CA8WL-AL
Obtained an IP address, subnet mask, and, if required, a gateway for the on-board Ethernet module from
an IT administrator or authorized source
Have the host-location IP address
Know the CA8WL-AL’s baud rate setting – 57,600 BPS or 115,200 BPS
Know the PC/laptop COM port with the serial data cable connected to the CA8WL-AL for programming the
on-board Ethernet module
Have an encryption key which must be coordinated with the host location so both keys are the same
Know the on-board Ethernet module’s connection port
Keyscan recommends that you perform the restore default settings – jumper J1 clear memory procedures
on page 18 before programming the CA8WL-AL for reverse network communication
About the Encryption Key
The encryption key for the CA8WL-AL’s on-board Ethernet module must consist of 32 characters (128 bit) or
64 characters (256 bits). Characters can be as follows in any combination:
Alpha A – F
Numeric 0 – 9
Example of 128 bits key – A91376F1 C3621FBC DD68917E 1006B167
The encryption key can be created at either the host/central monitoring location or the remote access control
location. But the key must be entered exactly the same in the following Keyscan software utilities:
Aurora – Application Utilities screen (host location)
System VII Settings – reverse network utility (host location)
Vantage Settings – reverse network utility (host location)
NETCOM Program Utility (remote location)
