Chapter 1: Introduction
The 184-pin DDR RAM DIMM socket comes with a pre-installed
512MB capacity DDR RAM DIMM and is able to support a module
with up to 2GB capacity.
The DIMM module is accessed through an opening on the side of the
controller canister. If you need to replace or upgrade the DIMM
module, please refer to
Section 5.3 for detailed procedures.
1.3.5 BBU
The Li-Ion BBU module can sustain cached data for days during a
power failure. It is shipped with S12F-R1432 (one for each controller)
but an optional item for S12F-G1433. (For BBU installation process,
please refer to
Section 2.10 .) The use of a BBU is highly
recommended in order to ensure data integrity. If power outage
occurs, the BBU supplies power to sustain the unfinished writes
cached in memory. The BBU module is hot-swappable.

The battery cell pack in the BBU module comes with an EEPROM to
record the date of installation. When the approximate one-year life
expectancy is reached (by checking against the real-time-clock),
system administrators will be notified for replacing the BBU.
