Remote support connection requirements
You must meet the requirements for the modem and for an outside connection if
you plan to use remote support.
The IBM-controlled HMC VPN solution is the preferred method for inbound and
outbound remote support connectivity over the Internet. If a modem is configured
at the same time it can be used by IBM personnel to initiate the VPN connection
from the HMC. Otherwise, your operations personnel must initiate the VPN using
DSCLI. Alternatively, Internet secure socket layer (SSL) can be configured for
outbound remote support connectivity. However, it cannot be used for HMC
inbound remote support connectivity. In this case, the modem must be configured
for IBM to remotely access the DS8000. If modem-less operation is required,
contact your IBM representative for more options. If a modem is the only available
option for remote support, Internet file transfer protocol (FTP) can be configured
for faster offload of dump and trace data over the internet. Note that remote
support over the modem takes considerably longer than the Internet connectivity
options. To support the modem connection you must provide the following
equipment close enough to each management console:
v
One analog telephone line for initial setup
v
A telephone cable to connect the modem to a telephone jack
To enable remote support, you must allow an external connection by one of the
following means:
v
A telephone line
v
An outbound Internet connection through your firewall that allows IBM to use a
VPN connection to your management console
The DS8000 modems support worldwide use, and they meet all required
standards.
Remote power control requirements
Remote power control allows you to control the power of your storage complex. It
can be controlled through the DS Storage Manager running on the management
console.
There are several settings for remote power control. Only the remote zSeries power
control setting requires planning on your part.
The remote zSeries power control setting allows one or more attached System z or
S/390 hosts to control the power on and power off sequences for your storage
unit. If you use the remote zSeries power control setting, you must meet the
following requirements:
v
Order the remote zSeries power control feature.
v
Allow up to four interfaces for remote zSeries power control.
SAN requirements and considerations
These requirements and considerations can help you plan for a DS8000 series that
attaches to a SAN.
A Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) is a specialized, high-speed network
that attaches servers and storage devices. With a SAN, you can perform an
any-to-any connection across the network using interconnect elements such as
routers, gateways, hubs, and switches.
