4.2 Repeater Mode
The repeater mode means that the repeater is adopted during communication to
extend the coverage area, due to geographical limitations such as mountains or
man made obstructions. As for the digital repeater, an outstanding advantage is to
detect and correct the error on the uplink during encoding and decoding, in order to
ensure more accurate signal transmitted to the downlink. As for the radio, most of
the basic voice and data services work the same in repeater mode as they do in
direct mode. On the basis of TDMA, the repeater uses on frequency pair
(1-transmit, 1-receive) to support two voice or data calls. In the repeater mode, if the
radio needs to transmit through the repeater, it should wake up the repeater. Then
this active repeater receives and retransmits the signal from any slot. However, if it
does not detect any service from any slot on the current channel, the sleep timer will
be enabled to start counting down, but the repeater is still in active mode. Once the
repeater detects data service within the preset time, this timer will stop counting
down. Otherwise, the repeater will stop transmitting and enter an inactive mode, if
no service is detected upon expiration of this timer. You can set the appropriate
sleep time period via the customer programming software according to your actual
needs.
When the repeater is free, it will send the message concerning its free status to all
radios on the current channel. After the radio receives this message, it synchronizes
with the repeater. If a call is established successfully between two parties, make
sure that they use the same frequency and slot. From the below diagram, at the
repeater side, the TX frequency is F2 and the RX is F1, and the slot 1 and slot 2 are
available. Thus two voice or data calls are supported. Accordingly, if radios satisfy
the following conditions, they can communicate with each other: the TX frequency is
F1, the RX frequency is F2, and the slot of the repeater to be used is identical.
