A continuous oil current flows through an optical sensor (1), the sensor consisting of an infrared
semiconductor LED (2) and a receiver diode (3) opposite of it. The contaminant particles contained in
the oil current dampen the light beam in a pulse-like manner, this being classified and counted as
measurement signals according particle diameter by an evaluation module (4).

The measurement of the flow rate required to determine the purity rating is performed by an integrated
flow rate meter (5), whose signals are also routed to the electronic evaluation module (4).
