•
In the case of the latter, individual parts, notably the petrol engine and other main
components, have weights up to 100kg
•
The cleaning activity requires the lance to be held at various heights and against the
reaction force of the water jet
•
The user therefore should carry out his own assessments covering the above
tasks/situations, ensuring the selection of operators with the necessary physical
capabilities.
Moving vehicles
– potential hazards to O&M staff (pedestrians/on foot)
•
It is recommended that the user carries out his own assessment to ensure the safety of
operators/pedestrians/those on foot from any moving vehicles in the area/associated
with the wider operation of this equipment/machinery.
•
This ideally requires a segregated work area away from moving vehicles plus
potentially appropriate barriers and signage
•
Health and Safety Executive publication HSG 136 is one document that covers these
matters.
Adequacy of lighting in the work area.
•
If use takes place outside daylight hours or in internal locations where light is restricted,
it is recommended that the user carries out his own assessment to ensure the
adequacy of lighting in the area to allow safe operation and maintenance of the
equipment.
Other hazards associated with the particular work environment
•
Depending on where, when and the particular circumstances of use, other hazards can
exist which are beyond the scope of this document.
•
The user therefore should ensure that all such circumstances are fully risk assessed
with appropriate controls and precautions put in place.
High pressure water
•
Pressurised cleaning water is generated by the high pressure (HP) pump, normally
contained within the HP pipework/hose system until released through the cleaning
lance.
•
The high pressure cleaning jet should only be used for bin and associated cleaning
tasks with other persons well clear of the water jet.
•
The jet should never be directed at people, animals, electrical equipment or fragile
items or surfaces where injury or damage could result.
•
It can also rebound from the surface being cleaned or cause removed debris to be
ejected back towards the operator.
•
Personal protective equipment should always be worn as
detailed in the “Safety in
Operation” section of this document.
•
The machine internals should not be accessed for any purpose, nor should guards be
removed, nor should any part of the system be dismantled or interfered with, without
the HP water supply first being isolated and depressurised by a person trained,
competent, and authorised to do so.
•
The HP system should be visually checked daily for any leaks which should be rectified
before continuing to use the equipment.
Hydraulic system and hydraulic powered items
•
The hydraulic system should not be dismantled or interfered with without the hydraulic
pump and system first being isolated and depressurised by a person trained,
competent, and authorised to do so.
•
All hydraulic parts and components should be inspected periodically to check for leaks
or other defects which should be remedied before continuing to use the machine.
