Introduction to Frame Relay
•
Control Protocol:
The Frame Relay protocol is a relatively
straightforward protocol with very few rules and
procedures. The basic idea is
fairly simple - if a
valid frame is received it should be forwarded to its
destination and, if congestion occurs, network
nodes can discard frames in order to alleviate the
problem. The Frame Relay Forum’s implementation
agreement reflects this ‘frame discard’ method but the
international standards offer additional options
including the LMI protocol.
(Refer to the section on LMI later in this Chapter for
further details).
A Typical Frame Relay Network
The following diagram shows a typical Frame Relay network:
Equipment & the Frame Relay Network
Data Terminal Equipment (DTEs):
These are the end-user devices which use Frame Relay
network services. These may be PCs, intelligent
terminals or host mainframes.
Frame Relay Access Device (FRAD):
This equipment accepts and encapsulates traffic for
transport over the network. Frame Relay Access
Equipment also communicates with Frame Relay
switches to set up and manage circuits and congestion.
Frame Relay Switches:
These switches accept traffic from access equipment
and relay it, over the network, to switches at the
other side.
