7.0 WHEEL AND TYRE CLASSIFICATION
7.1 Standard wheels
By standard wheel we mean a car wheel with steel or aluminium alloy rim with centre hole, groove close to the
outer part of the rim and a conventional tyre (not RUN-FLAT or low profile)
7.2 Wheels with low-profile tyres (UHP)
By LOW PROFILE tyres (UHP) we mean tyres whose height (H) and width (C) have a ratio of under 0.5 between
them (e.g. the 45 low profile series stands for a 0.45 H/C ratio).
For tyres to be considered LOW PROFILE (UHP) they must also have a maximum speed code equal to and/or
higher than V.
Maximum speed code
Q= up to 160 km/h
R= up to 170 km/h
S= up to 180 km/h
T= up to 190 km/h
7.3 Wheels with RUN-FLAT tyres
RUN-FLAT are tyres that even without pressure inside allow the car to travel for a certain number of miles and at
a specific speed. These values change from one manufacturer to another.
At present the market offers 2 different types of RUN-FLAT tyres:
- Those with the REINFORCED SIDE (self-supporting) where, thanks to a different mix and strengthened structu-
re, the side of the tyre can bear the weight of the car even when there is absolutely no pressure inside it.
- Those with INTERNAL SUPPORT having a ring fitted inside the rim that supports the side of the tyre when there
is no pressure inside it. This inside support can be in plastic (Pax-Sistem) or metal (Support-Ring).
All tyres that do not come in the above categories are considered standard.
The tyre changer can work on all “Standard”, “Low-Profile UHP” and reinforced side run-flat tyres.
Specific tools and accessories have to be used for run-flat tyres with inside support (Pax System or Support ring)
following the instructions given by the tyre manufacturers.
The procedure for taking tyres off and putting them (with the tyre changer) is similar for standard, low-profile UHP
and run-flat tyres with self-supporting reinforced side.
NOTE:
The blade bead breaker is recommended for bead breaking standard wheels if you want to speed work up
whereas for low profile and self-supporting run-flat wheels it is essential to use the disc bead breaker.
ATTENTION:
E’ indispensabile seguire scrupolosamente le istruzioni al fine di evitare danneggiamenti irreversibili
del pneumatico, e compromissione della sicurezza del veicolo.
U= up to 200 km/h
H= up to 210 km/h
V= up to 240 km/h
W= up to 270 km/h
ZR= > 240 km/h
ZR(Y)= > 300 km/h
8.0 WDK STANDARDS
WDK is a German certifying body that has evaluated the functioning of tyre changers and their ability to work with
RUN-FLAT and UHP tyres without damaging them in any way that could be potentially dangerous.
To carry out correct removal and mounting in compliance with the WDK standards the following is indispensable:
1. to know the guidelines – The guidelines are instructions on documents drawn up by WDK and valid for all tyre
changer brands. They contain theoretical information and instructions on how to avoid damaging tyres, rims and
pressure sensors (if present).
2. Qualified operator – The courses held are to allow the operator to learn all the directives and indications given
by WDK. It is also possible to attend a specific course to obtain the WDK certificate wherever this is necessary.
