Discs
SACD discs are a vast improvement in sound quality over the original
compact disc. Due to improvements in laser technology, SACD discs
allow information to be packed more densely on the disc, which in turn
means that more information than ever may be stored on a single disc.
The benefit to the audiophile listener is improved resolution and quality
of 2-channel recordings, and a whole new world of multichannel audio
recordings.
Some earlier SACD discs contain only a 2-channel program. Newer
discs may contain both a 2-channel and a multichannel version of the
same materials. The SACD Mode setting in the General Setup menu is
used to select between the SACD and CD layers of the disc. The Analog
Output setting in the AUDIO SETUP menu is used to select between
2-channel and multichannel SACD playback. Check the disc jacket to
find out which formats are available. SACD playback requires the use of
the 2- or 6-Channel Analog Audio Outputs. If only the HDMI, Optical or
Coaxial Digital Audio Outputs are used, no sound will be heard.
When an SACD disc is loaded, play will begin immediately. An SACD
Status Display will appear. The title bar indicates the disc type and
elapsed time. It is not possible to adjust the time display, and the Time
Search function is not available. In the main area of the display, the Disc
setting will indicate whether the Analog Output setting in the AUDIO
SETUP menu was set to Multichannel or Stereo (2-channel). You may
only change this setting in the AUDIO SETUP menu, and it will not affect
the current disc (open and close the disc drawer to have the new setting
take effect). The Repeat setting will indicate the current selection of
Repeat Track, Repeat All (disc), Repeat A-B or Off. Below this area the
tracks are listed, with the current track highlighted and indicated by
musical notes to the left. Press the Status Button to replace the track
list with a display of the disc title and artist’s name.
To select another track for playback, stop play of the current track
and use the

Buttons to scroll through the track list. The musical
notes icon will remain to indicate the last-selected track. Press the Enter
Button to select the new track, and it will begin playing. Alternatively,
use the Numeric Keys to enter the number of the new track, which will
appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Press the Enter Button
to begin play of the new track.
Random play and programmed playlists are not supported for SACD
discs. Also, it is not possible to remove the SACD Status Display from
view, although you may press the Video Off Button to turn off the video
display altogether.
NOTE:
If the SACD Mode setting in the GENERAL SETUP menu
is set to CD, and if the SACD disc is not a hybrid disc – that is,
it does not contain a CD layer – the DVD 48 will not be able to
play it. The UNKNOWN DISC message will appear in the front-
panel display. If this happens, open the disc drawer, and before
closing it again, change the SACD Mode setting to SACD.
