Cant Sawing
To saw a cant:
1. Inspect log and determine size of cant to be
produced. Mark planned cuts on end of log.
2. Load log on track bed and secure with log
supports and log clamp.
3. Cut slab from top of log and remove it (see
Figure 33).

4. Rotate cant 90° and secure using log sup-
ports to ensure cant is square to track (see
Figure 34).
Note: It is essential that the cut face of the
cant is secured perpedicular to the track on
the first rotation. When the first two cuts are
perdpendicular, the remaining sides will be
easy to square to the log supports.

5. Repeat Steps 3 & 4 for each side of cant.
6. If a square cant was the goal of the operation,
congratulations, you are finished! To cut the
cant into dimensional labor, proceed to
Live

Sawing a log into a square cant is a fundamental
sawing operation for any sawyer. When sawing a
cant, slabs are removed from four side of the log,
leaving a square beam.
