6.17 PTO GEARBOX REPAIR
1. Remove the lower sight tube fitting and drain the
oil.
2. Place the gearbox on two blocks of wood, output
shaft up.
3. Remove the retaining ring from the PTO input shaft
at the PTO clutch hub.
4. Clean the exposed area of the output shaft,
remove the six case bolts and split the case. See
Figure 47.
5. Remove the output shaft (lower) from the case.
Remove the retaining ring from the shaft to allow
the output gear to be removed. See Figure 48.
6. Remove the input shaft (upper) from the case.
7. Remove the retaining ring from the PTO clutch hub
at the PTO input gear and remove the PTO input
gear. See Figure 49.
8. Remove the woodruff key from the PTO clutch hub
and press the PTO clutch hub out of the case.
Press from the inside out. Inspect the two internal
bearings, replace if needed.
9. Turn the case half over and remove the two bolts
holding the front PTO cap in place. Remove the
cap and bearing.
10.Inspect and replace any worn or damaged parts.
11.Inspect the two case halves and replace the oil
seals prior to reassembling the PTO gearbox.
12.Assemble the PTO gearbox reversing the
disassembly procedure, watching out for the
following items:
a. Install the retaining rings flat side out.
b. Install the PTO input gear flat side away from the
bearing.
c. Install a new basket at the front PTO cap.
6.18 PTO GEARBOX INSTALLATION
1. Service the PTO gearbox with clean fresh 10W30
or 30W motor oil.
2. Position the PTO gearbox to the front of the
transaxle and start the two long mounting bolts.
3. Slide the PTO U-joint assembly onto the PTO input
shaft.
4. Install the third PTO mounting bolt. Torque the
mounting bolts to spec.
5. Torque the PTO U-joint bolts to spec.
6. Inspect and repair or replace any worn or damaged
PTO clutch parts.
7. Install the PTO clutch and PTO spring. Adjust
clutch.
