10.Place the O-ring into the housing assembly, then
slide the assembly into position over shaft.
11.Line up the location marks, then insert torque
screws (5) and torque to spec.
Replacement of Shaft and Trunnion Seals
1. Lip type seals are used throughout the
transmission. These seals can be replaced without
disassembly of the transmission: however,
replacement of either the input or output seal
requires removal of the transmission.
NOTE: In the case of trunnion shaft seals, it is neces-
sary that the retaining rings and washers be removed
before removing the seals. The washer should be
replaced if it is noticeably bent or distorted.
2. Pry the seal carefully out of the housing bore, using
care not to distort the housing or damage the bore
or shaft. Once removed, the seal is not reusable.
3. Prior to installing the new seal, polish the shaft
extension, wrap it in thin plastic and lubricate with
oil to insure that the seal is not damaged during
assembly.
4. Slide the seal over the shaft and press it into the
housing bore.
6.10 SUNSTRAND TRANSMISSION
MAJOR REPAIR
NOTE: Prior to major disassembly, the charge pump
must be removed.
1. Place the transmission with the shafts in a vertical
position. Remove the cap screws from the center
section and lift the center section off the
transmission.
2. If the valve plates remain on the center section,
remove them. Keep the motor valve plate separate
from the pump valve plate as they are not
interchangeable. If the valve plates remain on the
cylinder block, remove them at this time.
3. Remove the gasket, valve plate pins and locating
pins .
4. Lift out the (upper) pump cylinder block assembly
(Figure 27). This is the same for both pump and
motor. The pistons may come out of the cylinder
bores, however, there is no special orientation of
the piston to bore that needs to be maintained.
NOTE: Do not attempt to disassemble the spring and
other parts from the center bore of the cylinder block.
The entire assembly should be replaced if any of its
components are damaged.
