Accuracy
Gauging accuracy The current position can be determined by GPS on several meters exactly
since the signals of the satellites come from the Standard Positioning System (SPS) that is
reserved to the US military and its allies that supplies a little more inaccurate data than the
Precise Positioning system (PPS). For position sensing and Tracking, however, the SPS is
sufficient.
Almanac-data
describe the information, necessary for the GPS navigation, about constellation, location
and effectiveness of the satellites. The almanac-data must be entered before the navigation via
GPS can be used. They are in sub block 4 and 5 of the L1-signal. The storage of the almanac
data in the GPS receiver leads to different times until the first position sensing is available,
depending on the duration that the GPS device had no reception.
DATAoverIP
short for: Data transfer over internet protocol. Spooler-service for the precise data
transfer from the mobile Internet (for example data of the digital speedometer or bar codes).
Geostationary satellite
circles the earth twice daily in a height of 20.183 km. Each four satellites
move on each one of the six orbital planes, that are 55° inclined against equator level (bent) and
60° turned against each other. There is a satellite all 223 hours 55 minutes and 56,6 seconds
over the same point of the earth.
GPS
short for Global Positioning System. Satellite supported Navigation System calculates the
current position of the receiver from position, speed and time data of at least four geostationary
satellites (see also GPS status.) From the sent data the navigation system also calculates the
speed and the direction of the motion of the receiver.
GPS status
Currently the earth is circled by 32 active GPS satellites, dependent on the reception
conditions six to ten satellites are usually visible. For the position sensing four satellites are
necessary.
