8.0 CALIBRATING THE MACHINE
To make a correct choice of the volume of the product to
be used, the user must know, aside from the amount of
mixture dispensed per hectare, the following important
parameters:
8.1 MAXIMUM CONCENTRATION LIMIT OF
PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCT USED
This value is shown on the box of the plant protection
product, expressed in droplets in cm^2.
8.2 COVERAGE INTENSITY
The coverage intensity is the ideal number of droplets in
cm^2. You can have a good estimate by placing water
sensitive paper inside of vegetation and spraying the leaf
canopy with only water.
The water sensitive paper has a yellow superficial film
which turns blue when wet, thus allowing you to estimate
the size of the droplets.
There are different coverage intensities:
1.
Inefficient
2. Good
3. Acceptable
4. Too abundant
5. Washing
8.3 INDEX OF LEAF COVERAGE
The LAI (Leaf Area Index) is the ratio between the leaf
surface and the ground surface.
8.4 DEGREE OF PULVERISATION
The degree of pulverisation is the size of the droplets
produced by the atomiser nozzles.
It is important to know this parameter because to be able
to cover the leaves on both sides of the vegetation, small
droplets are necessary which, suspended in air, can
change direction.
Small droplets mean a low mixture volume per hectare
and a wider, more homogeneous and persistant coverage.
Fine droplets (100-200 μm) stick to a sloped surface,
while large ones (400-500 μm) tend to detach, removing
the product and dripping on the ground. Ultra-fine droplets
(<50 μm) tend to blow away with moderate air move
-
ments.
The size of the droplets is reduced with:
• Larger spraying angle.
•
Smaller nozzles (lower flow rate).
• Greater pressure.
Then using nozzles with fine sprays can considerably
increase the leaf surface covered by the plant protection
product.
8.5 LIMIT DISPERSIONS AS FAR AS
POSSIBLE
Dispersions of plant protection product are mainly due to:
• Loss in the atmosphere due to drifting and evapora-
tion of droplets smaller than 100μm.
• Dripping on the ground.
• Uneven treatment due to incorrect positioning of the
nozzles and conveyors and their incorrect adjustment.
• Uneven treatment due to lack of proportion between
forward speed and flow rate of the dispensers.
• Dosage errors in mixture preparation.
• Washing sprayer after treatment.
