If a leak develops through the stem journal the packing gland may need to be tightened. The
packing gland bolts should only be tightened by a hand wrench and should not be over
tightened. See the

It is not necessary under normal circumstances to add grease to a force trunnion ball valve
because the seats will ordinarily lubricate themselves. Adding grease without just cause will only
serve to trap dirt and debris in the body cavity, or worse yet, between the seat and the ball,
which will ultimately degrade sealing performance.
2.4.4
Field Repair of a Seat Leak
If a seat leak develops, the first step in attempting to remedy the problem should be to
flush the valve. Follow these steps to flush the valve:
A.)
Purchase a valve flushing compound from a reputable grease/sealant manufacturer.
Verify that the flushing compound
purchased is compatible with the valve materials of
construction & process media.
B.) Place the valve in the fully closed position and drain the valve body using steps given
in
Chapter Ⅵ. Periodic inspection Section 2.4.1

C.) Remove the cap from the grease zerk, taking care not to unscrew the actual grease
fitting.
D.) Load the flushing compound into your grease gun.
* Note: Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the workings of your grease gun by reading
the Manufacturer's manual. Proper use will help prevent injuries and extend the life of
your grease gun significantly.
