5. Using the XTA-50 in Remote Mode
The XTA-50 features the following interfaces for remote control (see Figure 2, p. 13 ):
• USB-B (see section Remotely Controlling the XTA-50 via USB-B, p. 35 )
• Ethernet (see section Remotely Controlling the XTA-50 via Ethernet, p. 38 )
• RS-232 for remote control (see section Remotely Controlling the XTA-50 via RS-232,
p. 41 )
With an external RS-232/GPIB converter, you can also use the RS-232 interface for
GPIB remote control (see section Remotely Controlling the XTA-50 via IEEE-488 with
an External Controller, p. 44 )
• DVI for remote display (section Controlling the XTA-50 Graphical Interface from an
External Screen, p. 43 )
5.1 Switching Between Remote and Local Mode
Procedures Entering the Remote Mode
The remote mode can only be used after initialization of the XTA-50 and after validation
of the presentation page appearing at device start-up.
The XTA-50 switches to remote mode in the following cases:
• An RS-232, USB or GPIB command is received.
• An Ethernet session is open.
When the XTA-50 enters the remote mode, the touch screen comes back to the main
menu and all controls are disabled.

If a sequence is running, wavelength, frequency and FWHM remote assignment are
disabled.
