6. Performing Basic Maintenance Operations
User maintenance of the XTA-50 system is limited to basic maintenance tasks that do
not require removing the instrument case-cover or accessing any internal component of
the instrument.
6.1 Updating the Firmware Version
Subject The firmware version update package is a .pkg file named XTA_Updater_x.xx.pkg where
x.xx is the firmware version. It is available on the EXFO website, from the EXFO Apps
area.
Before Starting Make sure you have a USB flash drive.
Procedure 1. From the EXFO website (EXFO Apps), download the last XTA-50 firmware version
update (.pkg file) and copy it to a USB device, so that the necessary .pkg file is
located at the USB device root.
2. Connect the USB device to one of the available USB ports located on the rear panel
(see
Figure 2, p. 13 ).
3. Turn off the XTA-50 (see section Turning off the XTA-50, p. 21 ).

On the front panel, press the
button to turn on the XTA-50.
The XTA-50 automatically detects the .pkg file on the USB device and starts the
system update wizard.
Warning
To avoid the possibility of injury, never remove the protective cover of the
chassis to perform servicing or maintenance operations to the XTA-50
internal parts and optical components.

Caution
Do not install a lower version of software than the current version installed
on your product. EXFO cannot be held liable or be made responsible for
problems caused by a software downgrade.
Important
Make sure the downloaded version is a higher version than the one
installed on your product.
Caution
To avoid serious system problems:
• Do not turn the XTA-50 off during the system update.
• Do not remove the USB device before the end of the upgrade
process.
