Use the following procedure to install memory DIMMs. Note that there is a key
notch near the center of the DIMM slots. This matches the gap on a DDR4
DIMM to ensure the memory is installed properly, and to prevent the
incorrect installation of memory.
1.
Unlock a DIMM slot by pressing the top-side module clips outward.
2.
Align the memory module to the DIMM slot, insert the module
vertically into the slot, and press straight down to fully seat the module.
The plastic clips at top side of the DIMM slot should automatically
lock the DIMM into the connector.
Note:
The memory controllers on Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs run at default
frequencies of 2400 and 2666MHz, respectively. Achieving memory speeds
above may require using the XMP profile or manual setting of the
memory timings, frequency and voltages and/or overclocking of the CPU.
Using an XMP profile for speeds over 2666MHz is considered overclocking.
Refer to the memory manufacturer specifications for the recommended
memory timings and settings.
Installing the I/O Shield and I/O Cover
The motherboard kit comes with an internal and external I/O shield that is
used to block internal components from dust and foreign objects, while also
promoting correct airflow within the chassis. The internal I/O shield is pre-
installed and designed to shield the I/O area from dust and foreign objects even
while used in an open-air environment.
Before installing the motherboard, install the external I/O shield from the
inside of the chassis. Press the I/O shield into place and make sure it fits.
The external I/O shield is designed to fit over the pre-installed shield, so you
will not normally need to remove the pre-installed I/O shield. If you need to
remove the pre-installed shield for any reason, please see the section on
installing a M.2 Key-E device on Page 43.
The X299 Dark also includes an I/O cover. This I/O cover adds a unique
appearance to the I/O area of the motherboard and directs the airflow for
optimal cooling to M.2 Socket 3 devices. The removable M.2 cover section
allows access to M.2 drive slots, and must be reattached after installing M.2
devices to ensure correct airflow.
