10• BREAKDOWNS AND REMEDIES

ANORMAL OPERATION

PROBABLE CAUSE

REMEDY

The engine does not start

Fuel tank empty

Fill with petrol 

Choke not engaged and engine cold

Actuate the choke

The spark plug lead is not connected

Connect the spark plug lead

Fuel pipe blocked

Have the fuel pipe cleaned by a specialist workshop

Air has penetrated the engine because the carburettor 

is loose

Tighten the fixing screws

The engine does not start ; there is a smell of petrol

The engine is receiving too much fuel

Place the throttle lever at maximum, choke off

Air filter clogged

Clean the air filter

Engine runs erratically, misses

The engine is running with the choke on

Deactuate the choke 

Ignition cable loose

Allow the engine to cool and carefully connect the 

spark plug lead

Air filter clogged

Clean the air filter

Fuel tank cap breather blocked

Replace the fuel tank cap

Fuel pipe blocked
