8.4 OPERATING PROCEDURES
REGULATING AIR FLOW
IMPORTANT: Only tractors with "closed centre" hydraulic systems are suitable for this setup:
Flow control on the tractor
’s ports is essential.
Background to the working of the system:
The fan delivers an air stream passing underneath the metering units which delivers product at
a calibrated rate into said air stream. Pressure builds inside the bins of the hopper which is
closed off from atmosphere by air tight lids. The system’s capacity to convey product to the row
units is directly linked to the air pressure built inside the bins.
Two types of pressure readings are relevant in the setup and operation of the system:
1. Static air pressure: This is the reading registered with the planter stationary, metering roller
stationary (no product metered) with the fan running at speed and all lids closed.
2. Dynamic pressure: This is the reading registered while the planter is operational, moving at
ideal planting speed.
Air pressure can be increased or decreased by adjusting the fan speed up or down respectively.
Oil flow rate from the tractor determine fan speed.
Tractor
– Hopper integration:
1. Connect the hydraulic hoses to the tractor.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure the 1” return line is connected to a dump line as per the tractor’s
manual. This line may not be connected to a normal SCV quick coupler.
2. Set the oil flowrate on the SCV selected for the HOPPER FAN to 25% of full flow. Setting
the fan flow to 100% from the start can result in destruction of the fan and injury.
3. Check that all the tank and metering unit lids are closed.
4. Activate hydraulic flow to the hopper fan.
5. Check for- and fix any leaks on the air hopper.
6. Observe the tank pressures on the gauge panel. Adjust the hopper air pressure by
increasing or decreasing the flow to the hopper fan. The fan pressure should be set
according to the table below for the desired application rate.
IMPORTANT : For dual mixer metering units, set the fertilizer air pressure 0.2 to 0.4 kPa above
the seed air pressure. Do not exceed 0.5 kPa

NOTE: During planting the pressure will settle at a higher value, 2-3 kPa higher,
when product is introduced into the air stream. This is normal.
