enable you to see th ese f ea ture s in a ction . Although you m ay not do
much of your p r i nt i ng u si n g BASIC , it wa s chosen for th e demon-
strations beca u se mo s t c o mputer sy s tems include som e form of
BASIC, and t h e e x a mpl es a r e ones that a lmost everyon e of you can
tryout .
You only nee d t o know a littl e a bout BASIC to typ e in and run
these progra m s. Running the programs , r e ading the ex pl anations
and looking a t th e printed e x ample s, show you how th e LX-SO
responds to the m ess age s th e computer sends it by printin g l etters,
numbers, sym bol s, a nd gr a phic s in va rious print mod es.
Even if you neve r u se BASIC a gain , you will know the cap abilities
of the printer, c a p a biliti e s that c a n often solve your print ing prob-
lems. For exa mpl e, if you need a special symbol, such a s t he Greek
character ~, yo u will kno w th a t you can turn to the ch a pt er on
user-defined c h a r a ct e rs and create s uch a character .
The exercises in BASIC a re not absolutel y essential . Many users are
quite happy w ith th e ir printer s without ever learning a n y more
about them t h a n h o w to turn them on and off and h ow to load
paper . In mos t cases th e s oftw a r e th a t y ou use for word pr ocessing,
business, or g r a phic s do es th e ca lcul a ting and communic a ti ng with
the printer for yo u .
