In Figu re 3-3 there is a grid of lines behind the pica charact e r s to
s ho w mor e c learly how they are designed . As you look at th ese
c ha r a c t e r s yo u can see three rules that govern their design. The
co lum n o n the right side is always l eft blank so that there will be
s p aces b e t wee n the characters on a line; no character uses b o th the
to p a n d th e bo ttom row ; and a dot can be placed on a vertic a l line
o nl y w h e n th e columns next to that line are n ot used.

NLQMode
The p recee d i ng examples are in the LX-80 ' s draft mode , bu t the
LX - 8 0 a l so offe rs the high-quality NLQ (Near Letter Quality) m ode
t h a t yo u h ave s een in previous chapters.
T h e N L Q l ette rs are more fully formed t h an the draft lett e r s be-
ca u se t h ey a r e made up of many more dots . Two differen ces be-
twee n d r af t a nd NLQ printing enable the LX-80 to print such a l arge
n umb er of d ots for each character . In the NLQ mode , th e h ead
m o ves mo r e s lowly , so that dots can overlap horizontally , and each
c h a r acter i s p r inted by the head moving back to the beginning of the
li n e a nd p r i n ti ng more dots on top of the first ones . This is kn ow n as
a d o u b l e pass.
To fur th er e n s ure the quality of NLQ characters, both passe s o f the
pr int h ead a r e in the same direction so that the a l ignment of the d ots
is exac t .
